Lange habe ich überlegt, ob ich hier einen Bericht über diese Blues-Legende schreiben soll. Werden sonst die Berichte über Musiker, die ich gelesen habe,
meist von jungen Leuten geschrieben, deren Musikrichtung eine ganz andere ist.
Doch hat die Nachricht, dass John Lee Hooker am Donnerstag in San Frncisco im Alter von dreiundachtzig Jahren verstorben ist, mich dazu verleitet im CD-Schrank zu wühlen und die Hooker CD,s zu höhren. Der alte Sound hat mich nun bekräftigt ein paar Zeilen über ihn zu berichten.
Beim Einloggen in die entsprechende Katgorie habe ich nun festgestellt, dass ich nicht alleine bin und werde gleich die anderen zahlreichen Berichte über Hooker lesen. So können wir auch bei Ciao, John Lee Hooker ein Gedenken schaffen.
Leben von Hooker: Der Sohn einer kinderreichen Landarbeiterfamilie aus Clarksdale, tingelte viele Jahre durch die Bars der Kleinstädte der USA. Er wurde eigentlich erst mit dreißig Jahren erfolgreich, nachdem auch weiße Musiker den Blues entdeckt hatten und in ihrer Musik umsetzten. Mit dem Film "Blues Brother", der in Europa den Blues für viele Leute populär machte, wurden Musiker wie Ray Charles und John Lee Hooker auch in Europa berühmter und schafften den Durchbruch.
Hookers letzte CD "The Healer" wurde auch in Europa ein Kassenschlager.
Hooker überzeugt auch hier durch seinen handgemachten schwarzen Blues. Ganze siebzig Jahre hat dieser Mann Musik gemacht und ist seinem Musikstil immer treu geblieben.
Zuletzt lebte er in San Francisco in einer riesigen Villa in Form einer Gitarre. Er sammelte Nobelautos und lebte wie ein König - König des Blues. Es ist zu hoffen, dass er glücklich gestorben ist.
Der Blues: Wo dieser eigentlich seinen Ursprung hat , kann keiner so genau sagen. Irgendwie ist er während der Sklavenzeit zwischen Afrika und Armerika entstanden.
Die Schwarzen erzählten in ihren Liedern über ihre Gefangenschaft und über ihr Leid als Sklaven. Harlem ist als Heimat des Blues und des Jazz bekannt. Dort klingt der satte Sound aus jeder kleinen Bar.
John Lee Hooker hatte zur Entstehung des Blues seine eigene Theorie. Er meinte, dass mit dem Rauswurf von Adam und EVA aus dem Paradies der Blues entstand.
Ist zu hoffen, dass solch ein großer Musiker viele musikalischen Erben findet.
Fazit: Ich werde heute Abend einen guten Rotwein trinken, eine gute Zigarre rauchen, den satten Sound von John Lee Hooker genießen und die Blues-Legende leben

"I Want Candy" - so sang in den Sechzigern schon die Gruppe Strangeloves. Sie konnten allerdings Candy Dulfer nicht gemeint haben, denn die wurde erst 1969 geboren. Wem aber heutzutage nach Candy gelüstet, der ist mit der holländischen Saxofonistin und ihrem neuen Album allemal besser bedient als mit handelsüblichen Süßigkeiten. Dass sie in ihrem Metier zu den Weltbesten gehört, hat sich seit der Single "Lily Was Here" aus dem gleichnamigen Film, die sie zusammen mit Dave Stewart von den Eurythmics einspielte, eh schon längst herumgesprochen. "Lily Was Here" erschien 1989; im selben Jahr war die blonde Holländerin auch auf dem "Batman"-Soundtrack neben Prince zu hören, mit dem sie seither immer mal wieder - und zuletzt 2006 auf seinem Album "Musicology" - arbeitete. Auch Maceo Parker und Van Morrison holten sich die Sax-Königin gern als Begleitmusikerin. Sie wussten, warum. Mit ihrem neuesten Album, dem elften seit dem Debüt "Saxology" von 1990, weiß es jetzt spätestens auch der skeptische Hörer. Denn Candy Dulfer macht ihrem guten Ruf wieder einmal alle Ehre. In den zwölf Tracks zeigt sie, dass sie das Einmaleins des Funk verinnerlicht hat und mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit und langem Atem immer den richtigen Groove findet. Mit ihrem röhrenden Saxofon erinnert sie - zum Beispiel im Titelstück - an Junior "Shotgun" Walker, der einst den Motown-Sound abrundete. In einem Track wie "Be Cool" verbindet sie die federnde Funk-Basis mit jazzigen Linien. Und natürlich hat sie auch die schweren Beats drauf, wie sie Prince in seinen besten "Purple Rain"-Zeiten kultivierte. Ihre Truppe strickt dazu ein perfektes, eng anliegendes Soundkorsett für Candy Dulfers Sax-Figuren; Rap- und Gesangseinlagen sorgen für Abwechslung. It's Partytime! Manfred Gillig-Degrave

Dass Nina Hagen sich nicht einfach vor eine Big Band stellt und ausgewogen Broadway-Melodien intoniert, erwartet wohl niemand. Warum sie es mit dem Album Big Band Explosion überhaupt tut, ist eine Frage für sich. Nur weil alle Welt, von Rainhard Fendrich bis Rod Stewart, im Schellack-Archiv der Großeltern blättert, ist ja noch kein überzeugendes Argument. Zumal die meisten Werke, je nach Temperament, auch nur bedingt überzeugen. Ein Nina-Hagen-Abend live mit der Leipzig BigBand lässt sich noch gut und recht amüsant vorstellen, auch ein oder zwei schräg gezwitscherte Evergreens.
An welche Zielgruppe hat Frau Hagen bei diesem Album gedacht? Nina-Fans werden sich schon bei "Let Me Entertain You" verwirrt am Kopf kratzen, der extrem forcierte "Sugar Blues" mag sie nochmal versöhnen. Für echte Bigband-Fans sind ihre überzogenen Interpretationen von "Rhythm And Romance" oder "Over The Rainbow" eher schlechte Persiflagen, und wer etwas richtig Schräges sucht, dem bleibt allenfalls noch das Duett (mit Lucas Alexander) "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off", weil hier die gesangliche Frotzelei vom Thema her noch funktioniert.
Die amerikanischen Songbook-Perlen vertragen, falls man sie nicht gerade heraus singt, rein kompositorisch gesehen nur leise, ironische Untertöne. Und das war noch nie Nina Hagens Sache. Ganz klar, sie überfährt wie immer jeden und übernimmt die Führung. Doch erstaunlicherweise ist die Leipzig Bigband so souverän, dass sie nicht aus dem Konzept kommt. A new CD by Gandalf called Sanctuary continues in his usual musical tradition… i.e. I like this a lot, but he’s not doing anything particularly new… on the other hand, why mess with success?
What sets him apart from many New Age composers and performers is his lush orchestrations and that he’ll change up his leads… i.e. one song focuses on guitar, another on piano, another is more sitar-oriented, etc. It’s a very comforting sound, meditative, like you’re in a forest where the struggle for survival has been overcome by all the plants and animals that are usually locked into the mortal combat known as the eco-system.
This runs together as all one piece, no breaks between the tracks, and the various songs borrow from each other. My fave track on this CD is “Citadel, Part 1” which has many moods and in the end makes a grand exit with a very simple melody, there’s some “to die for” string harmonies in here that take the listener higher and higher, as a major key melody keeps breaking out of a minor key intro.
I think what makes him good is as much as what the material is, is what he does with it, how he surrounds it with some really cool orchestration, or drumbeats that sometimes only put in the barest essentials of rhythm.
In any event, Gandalf, an Austrian artist who uses this Lord of the Ring pseudonym, should be proud of making life just that much better for so many listeners. (Quelle Label Real Music)

"Very little is cooler & more exciting, new-age-musically speaking, than opening a pack of promo CDs and finding a new release from Gandalf, the Austrian musician who took his stage name from Mr. Wizard of Lord of the Rings. He's the cut-above in the new age world, 'new classical' is what he's been called by some, where you can actually listen to the music, or just have it roll over you in the background.
Lotus Land is in ways much like his earlier releases, but much different, in that you're not going 'Oh it's the same damn thing!' You can play it over and over, the same smooth rolling guitars, keys, English horn; a bit more sitar this time, melodies reprising when you don't expect it, just very nice driving-in-the-dark or I-have-that-special-someone kind of music. Could be the orchestration, the fact that he uses a variety of instruments, it's well thought out what plays where, it's all lush and peaceful and does what it's supposed to do.
I like 'Life is Love,' which takes a sitar into a more western sonic landscape; that same simple melody comes back later in the CD, a bit more subtly. This Sitar comes back in 'Just a Glimpse of Paradise,' which almost gives you just a glimpse of the tune from "Life if Love." The start of Mystic Voyage has a great sounding 'synth pad over bells' going, then in comes the piano; it's how he handles the simplest of chords that makes much of this so nice.
Remember the land of the lotus eaters from The Odyssey? If you ate the lotus, you were really really happy and wouldn't care about your wife, kids, or the rest of your life. This won't quite do that, but it'll 'take you away' in a very nice way. Very pretty stuff." (Quelle Label Real Music)
